Various historical and cultural heritages lie dormant at the bottom of the world's oceans.
During the Age of Discovery, when European powers such as Spain and Portugal expanded their colonies around the world, much of the plundered wealth was transported to Europe by ship.
East-West trade also flourished, and there were maritime trade routes known as the "Silk Road of the Sea" between Asian countries and the Middle East., and a great number of ships were lost or sunk along these maritime trade routes and their vicinity, and their various wealth and valuable trade goods are still lying at the bottom of the sea. These buried treasures are now a valuable historical and cultural heritage in human history.
According to UNESCO, there are an estimated 3 million sunken ships currently lying on the bottom of the ocean. The discovery and salvage of these wrecks, and the appraisal of their many cargoes, reveals the life and culture of the people in those days. It is a world of dreams and romance that takes us back to a time 300 years ago, or even 500 years ago.
One of the reasons for my fascination with this world and pass into it was my encounters with Robert Marks and Klaus Kepler, the world's greatest treasure hunters and the fathers of underwater archaeology. I spent time with them at various sites, gaining a great deal of experience and becoming increasingly fascinated by the depths of this world.
I have been engaged in the business of discovering, researching, salvaging, and restoring to the present day the historical cultural heritage that lie dormant at the bottom of the world's oceans with partners who have specialized qualifications in the research and salvage of underwater archaeological sites. These partners include a group of highly qualified staff members who have excavated the ancient Egyptian city of Alexandria under the sea and have salvaged a series of archaeologically significant historical shipwrecks.
In the past few years, we have been receiving information on these shipwrecks from Japan and other Asian countries such as the Philippines and Indonesia, and we have established a Japanese corporation, POLARSTAR ASIA JP, and was decided to carry out these activities in earnest in order to examine and commercialize this information.
This project begins with information gathering and analysis. It is based on research and study of historical documents and archives to determine its location, and also gather information from local people. Then, with government permission, underwater exploration is conducted using the latest high-tech equipment, and finally, a direct survey dive is conducted to confirm the location. This determination may reveal the name of the sunken ship, its nationality, when and why it sank, and what kind of cargo it was carrying. After this determination, a detailed field survey of the sunken ship is conducted on the bottom of the sea. This field survey of the seafloor is conducted with great care and provides valuable academic research material.
After this field research on the seafloor is completed, it is time for the salvage operation and the research and study of the salvage. These salvaged artifacts are truly silent witnesses to history and are a precious historical heritage for all mankind. Many of the salvaged artifacts are also taken back to museums around the world upon request.
POLARSTAR ASIA JP, the only company in Japan specializing in the salvage of sunken vessels, will continue to communicate its activities in the future.
